2 More Days!

We finalized the repairs on the RV today.  Let me say first that if you buy and RV, especially a used one, buying an extended warranty is well worth the money.  During all of the back and forth to get the original problems fixed, the motor on the front slide out stopped working.

Things worked out well on two counts.  First, we had already returned it to the service center because it wasn’t fixed correctly the first time when the slide out motor started having problems.

Second, we had purchased an extended warranty from Good Sam, so the repair was covered other than our $250 deductible.

Now, everything’s done and when Jodi returns from Atlanta we’ll load up and head out.

The Daisy Train

The Daisy Train is ready to roll!!We finally have “The Beast” back from the RV hospital. It has been a patient at Alliance Coach since 6/30 and we were beginning to wonder if it would be finished before time to leave The Villages.

Side note: Alliance Coach – Wildwood at The Villages, FL is absolutely wonderful! If you are in the area and looking for a new trailer, motor coach, parts, or service, speak with Mike Wittman. He sure took care of these two novice RV owners. They even have a campground and dog park!

So, we were a bit nervous about our repair bill. There were 11 items that were MUST do and a few that were optional. But, it all turned out well and kind of weird. For instance, how much do you think it would cost to fix an AC unit? Now, how much would you guess two new side mirrors would cost?Unless you have dealt with these issues, I bet your guess was wrong. The AC cost $180 to fix. The new side mirrors cost almost $2000!!! Bah! The mirrors are all smart and fancy with turn signals, heat, tinting… Basically, you can’t change styles or downgrade because the wiring won’t match up.But, we got a great deal on our RV and we knew that meant we would need to put some money into it. So, we paid around $20K under book value and our 11 repairs cost us $2900 (yes, that is $2K for the mirrors and $900 for 10 additional repairs). Plus, the alternator belt installed on the side of i10 in TX cost $500. So, we still feel like it was a great purchase. (See interiors photos below this post.)

Budget: For those following our budgeting process, this is how we pay for the RV, maintenance, fuel, and camping: It comes out of our housing budget. We budget $2000/month for housing no matter what. As you can imagine, the months of living in the RV are far below that budget. Of course, most of the homes we rent are below that monthly cost, as well. It’s working for now. We’ll keep you posted.

Back to our home in The Villages, FL

We have returned for the second year to this vacation rental in The Villages, FL. We love it here! Of course, it’s somewhat empty because most normal people do not want to be in central Florida in July and August. But, we really enjoy the slow pace and the lack of crowds.

We have such a beautiful view from the living room. Even though it’s too hot to sit outside, we can still enjoy the wildlife and golfers from the comfortably air conditioned house.

It’s also nice to have wifi and a robust satellite TV package. Not all of our rentals have such nice electronics and services. But, that’s alright. It helps us appreciate these luxuries when we do have them.

Daisy loves the couches at this house. I don’t blame her! They’re very comfy and feature electric recliners. Nice!

Although the temperatures have been in the high 90’s with “feels like” temps around 106, we still enjoy being here. I’m sure we’ll return next year.

This house is perfect for hosting company and we’re so excited to have several friends coming to visit during our stay.

Motorhome Firsts

In keeping with our new adventure of RV ownership “firsts”, we are about to weather our first major storm.

As you know, we’ve already experienced the death of an air conditioner during record breaking high temps in TX, LA, MS, AL, and now FL. Of course, you shared in our misery while we waited on the side of i10 for a new alternator belt.

So, at this point, we should be wondering if this was a good idea. Right?

Nope! We love it!

The doggies love it, too!

But, the “firsts” that are scary and cost big money can STOP!!!

Pancakes, Hikes, Naps and Sushi

Today is Mother’s Day and we’re in Ocean Springs, MS.  We had a great day today.

The weather here right now is great with highs in the high 70’s to low 80’s and sunny.  Since it’s Mother’s Day, Jodi had her choice of what we did. First, we went for breakfast at a small diner in downtown Ocean Springs at a place called Buzzy’s Breakfast Joint.  If you’re ever in the area it’s worth checking out.

Then we took  a hike with the dogs at what we thought was a trail.  After a short distance, we learned that it was a 1/2 mile path to a campground.  That turned out to be a really nice surprise though.  There were several nice people out and about that were happy to see the dogs and talk.

We came back to our guest house rental and decided a nap was in order for all.  Naps are awesome.  Nothing more to say.

Finally, we headed out for Jodi’s mother’s day choice: sushi.  Jodi is much more of a sushi fan than I am, but I was really glad we went.  Good place called Ichiban if you’re ever in the area.

Back in Georgia

We’re back where we started this month.  In Georgia.  In Acworth to be exact.  We’re staying in one of the cabins by Lake Alatoona again.  We spent a week here a little over a year ago.  We’re staying a month this time.

There aren’t many rentals in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia, so we’re pretty limited on where we can stay here.  The majority of the rentals that are here are incredibly overpriced in our opinion, and not worth breaking our budget for.

We had to make a Walmart run last night and became extremely aware of the fact that we’re back among the suburban zombies.  Everyplace was busy.  Roads that used to be slow country roads are now mini highways.  Very few people would look at us or speak.  We seem to be invisible here.

On the brighter side, it is nice to be someplace where we know the lay of the land better.    That way, if we have to escape from the zombies at least know the roads.

Rattlesnake Saloon

If your are ever close to the Tuscumbia/ Muscle Shoals/Florence, Alabama area, you MUST visit Rattlesnake Saloon! They have seasonal hours so make sure to check their website for hours of operation.

Last weekend there were over 400 horses here at Seven Springs Lodge. The American Trail Ride Association brought a huge group to town. In May, you can check out the 2016 Chuck Wagon Races. Take a look at their event calendar.

Have you ever been to a restaurant/bar under a giant rock? Yep, it was a first for us, too. But, yeehaw! It sure was fun!! We give it 5 stars and a MUST SEE!

We had a fun group tonight. My mom and dad, our daughter, and the owners of our current rental, and their son all went to dinner with us.

Is this cheaper than owning a home?

We asked for reader questions on our traveling way of life and I’m excited to say that we got some.  We’re going to take each question as an individual blog post.

The first question was “is this cheaper than owning a home?

The simple answer is absolutely yes!  We owned a home in the East Cobb area of Marietta, Georgia.  Our monthly expenses included the house payment, normal utility bills, insurance, maintenance, repairs, taxes, hoa dues, etc.  The costs involved in owning a house can add up quickly and it can be difficult to account for every cost at times.

We no longer own a home and we don’t rent long term.  When we rent, the utilities and maintenance are part of what we pay.  There are no hidden or surprise expenses and we pay considerably less than we did before we sold our house.

If you own a house with no mortgage payment, then our way may not be cheaper.  In this case it would depend on the cost of utilities, maintenance, property taxes and hoa dues(if applicable).

I’ll answer the next question in the next post.  Have a question of your own?  Comment and let us know.

What would you like to know?

We’ve been talking lately about our blog and the fact that we need to post more.  Here’s the problem, what do we write about?

We’ve been living in vacation homes and moving once a month for over a year now and the whole process has just become routine to us.  We’re still learning all of the time, but we don’t think about what someone would want to know about our lifestyle.

So, we have a favor to ask.  What would you like to know?  What are you curious about or what doesn’t make sense?  When we started living this way, it was all guess work.  We have made many adjustments along the way to get to where we are now and we really want to share our ideas and discoveries with others.  IMG_0121
