2 More Days!

We finalized the repairs on the RV today.  Let me say first that if you buy and RV, especially a used one, buying an extended warranty is well worth the money.  During all of the back and forth to get the original problems fixed, the motor on the front slide out stopped working.

Things worked out well on two counts.  First, we had already returned it to the service center because it wasn’t fixed correctly the first time when the slide out motor started having problems.

Second, we had purchased an extended warranty from Good Sam, so the repair was covered other than our $250 deductible.

Now, everything’s done and when Jodi returns from Atlanta we’ll load up and head out.

The Daisy Train

The Daisy Train is ready to roll!!We finally have “The Beast” back from the RV hospital. It has been a patient at Alliance Coach since 6/30 and we were beginning to wonder if it would be finished before time to leave The Villages.

Side note: Alliance Coach – Wildwood at The Villages, FL is absolutely wonderful! If you are in the area and looking for a new trailer, motor coach, parts, or service, speak with Mike Wittman. He sure took care of these two novice RV owners. They even have a campground and dog park!

So, we were a bit nervous about our repair bill. There were 11 items that were MUST do and a few that were optional. But, it all turned out well and kind of weird. For instance, how much do you think it would cost to fix an AC unit? Now, how much would you guess two new side mirrors would cost?Unless you have dealt with these issues, I bet your guess was wrong. The AC cost $180 to fix. The new side mirrors cost almost $2000!!! Bah! The mirrors are all smart and fancy with turn signals, heat, tinting… Basically, you can’t change styles or downgrade because the wiring won’t match up.But, we got a great deal on our RV and we knew that meant we would need to put some money into it. So, we paid around $20K under book value and our 11 repairs cost us $2900 (yes, that is $2K for the mirrors and $900 for 10 additional repairs). Plus, the alternator belt installed on the side of i10 in TX cost $500. So, we still feel like it was a great purchase. (See interiors photos below this post.)

Budget: For those following our budgeting process, this is how we pay for the RV, maintenance, fuel, and camping: It comes out of our housing budget. We budget $2000/month for housing no matter what. As you can imagine, the months of living in the RV are far below that budget. Of course, most of the homes we rent are below that monthly cost, as well. It’s working for now. We’ll keep you posted.

Back to our home in The Villages, FL

We have returned for the second year to this vacation rental in The Villages, FL. We love it here! Of course, it’s somewhat empty because most normal people do not want to be in central Florida in July and August. But, we really enjoy the slow pace and the lack of crowds.

We have such a beautiful view from the living room. Even though it’s too hot to sit outside, we can still enjoy the wildlife and golfers from the comfortably air conditioned house.

It’s also nice to have wifi and a robust satellite TV package. Not all of our rentals have such nice electronics and services. But, that’s alright. It helps us appreciate these luxuries when we do have them.

Daisy loves the couches at this house. I don’t blame her! They’re very comfy and feature electric recliners. Nice!

Although the temperatures have been in the high 90’s with “feels like” temps around 106, we still enjoy being here. I’m sure we’ll return next year.

This house is perfect for hosting company and we’re so excited to have several friends coming to visit during our stay.

I drove a golf cart through hell and back

It is just fun to be able to drive a golf cart wherever you need to go within The Villages.  Take today for example.  I needed to pick up some rental papers from the main rental office in Lake Sumter Village.  According to The Villages GPS app, it’s a 5 mile drive via golf cart.

It was about 10am or so and I had been out with the dogs and it wasn’t too hot.  So I made the choice to drive the golf cart over.  Unfortunately, I didn’t plan ahead for the second half of my mission.  It was a very comfortable and pleasant drive over. One of those days when everything just seems to be right.  I got my business done at the sales office, had lunch at Panera Bread and then headed back home.

As I said before, the weather on the trip to Lake Sumter was very nice.  The weather on the way back was similar to what I would imagine hell feels like.  Even with the heat though, it was still fun.  Plus, environmentally speaking, I’m sure I saved a penguin or something by driving the cart instead of the car.  Actually, a polar bear probably ate the penguin that I may have saved, so all of my efforts were for nothing.

Oh well.  If you ever come and stay at the Villages, make sure you have a golf cart.  You’ll be glad you did.

The Villages, FL Vacation Home – Village of Hillsboro – July 2015

This is more of a video tour than a review. We absolutely loved this house but, the owners love it, too. The day after we checked out, they moved in full time. I don’t blame them. It’s a great little house. But, this means that none of you will have a chance to rent this beautiful home.

As usual, I waited until check-out day to do the video and I forgot a few things like the exterior and the garage. But, at least I remembered to take the video. Right?

Doggie Paradise

We live in a neighborhood of Courtyard Villas. They are the only homes in The Villages that have fenced in yards. As you can imagine, every home in these sections is occupied by animal lovers and their pets. Animal lovers are good neighbors!

This is the grassy half of our little courtyard in The Villages. It’s not huge but it’s perfect! Most of the vacation homes that we’ve rented, so far, have had decent yards. And I would say that all of them have been bigger than this one.

But folks, it is not the size of the yard but the area of the fence that makes life fun for the doggies and easier on us!!

This is the other side of our courtyard. You may be wondering why we would be so excited to have a fenced in, concrete, runway. Well, I’ll tell you why:

This is where we throw a ball and run Miss Daisy until she drops.

It’s awesome! The ball bounces off the fence, the house, the bushes…She loves it! We love it! We love Daisy when she’s a little less awake and less in love with life.

Boogie, of course, just likes to go out and lay his belly in the warm concrete and charge up his solar panels in the Florida sun.

Oh, and this is the first house that we’ve stayed in that has NO steps. Do you know how happy that makes an old Beagle with 4 inch ground clearance? Boogie thinks The Villages were made for him and I would have to agree.
