Things be crazy, yo!

I thought I would give you all an update on the craziness… This dog is a mess!! I bought her a pumpkin last week and she loves to bite, scratch, and roll it around. Well, today she made it to the gooey center and thinks that it needs to be brought inside to the comfort of the leather couch. Ugh!

Meanwhile, Brodie is trying to shave, get a washcloth bath, all while trying not to pass out from standing on one leg in our little RV bathroom. Did I mention that the screen door doesn’t want to stay shut and that stupid dog keeps getting inside with that damn pumpkin?

NOW HIRING: Dog walker, dish washer, husband washer, bandage changer, life coach, cook… No pay but you will live at the beach!

Brodie went to physical therapy yesterday and had some setbacks. It seems that when they unwrap the tight dressing around the knee, all of the trapped “stuff” rushes all through the body and tries to make you puke and pass out.

Bright spot: My wonderful parent-cousins showed up with dinner for us last night. It was awesome and we are so greatful for their generosity and love!!❤️

I am supposed to leave for a business trip tomorrow. That’s not happening! The timing for this surgery was horrible but I’m glad it’s done. We just have to struggle through this hopefully short recovery period without any more setbacks.

Now, let’s talk about the “Jones’s”next door. Who can keep up with these folks? Yep, that’s two wave runners, a dirt bike, a Smart Car, and two bikes. Impressive! And, they both have use of their legs! Show offs!

Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming! Just keep swimming….

The Daisy Train

The Daisy Train is ready to roll!!We finally have “The Beast” back from the RV hospital. It has been a patient at Alliance Coach since 6/30 and we were beginning to wonder if it would be finished before time to leave The Villages.

Side note: Alliance Coach – Wildwood at The Villages, FL is absolutely wonderful! If you are in the area and looking for a new trailer, motor coach, parts, or service, speak with Mike Wittman. He sure took care of these two novice RV owners. They even have a campground and dog park!

So, we were a bit nervous about our repair bill. There were 11 items that were MUST do and a few that were optional. But, it all turned out well and kind of weird. For instance, how much do you think it would cost to fix an AC unit? Now, how much would you guess two new side mirrors would cost?Unless you have dealt with these issues, I bet your guess was wrong. The AC cost $180 to fix. The new side mirrors cost almost $2000!!! Bah! The mirrors are all smart and fancy with turn signals, heat, tinting… Basically, you can’t change styles or downgrade because the wiring won’t match up.But, we got a great deal on our RV and we knew that meant we would need to put some money into it. So, we paid around $20K under book value and our 11 repairs cost us $2900 (yes, that is $2K for the mirrors and $900 for 10 additional repairs). Plus, the alternator belt installed on the side of i10 in TX cost $500. So, we still feel like it was a great purchase. (See interiors photos below this post.)

Budget: For those following our budgeting process, this is how we pay for the RV, maintenance, fuel, and camping: It comes out of our housing budget. We budget $2000/month for housing no matter what. As you can imagine, the months of living in the RV are far below that budget. Of course, most of the homes we rent are below that monthly cost, as well. It’s working for now. We’ll keep you posted.

Back to our home in The Villages, FL

We have returned for the second year to this vacation rental in The Villages, FL. We love it here! Of course, it’s somewhat empty because most normal people do not want to be in central Florida in July and August. But, we really enjoy the slow pace and the lack of crowds.

We have such a beautiful view from the living room. Even though it’s too hot to sit outside, we can still enjoy the wildlife and golfers from the comfortably air conditioned house.

It’s also nice to have wifi and a robust satellite TV package. Not all of our rentals have such nice electronics and services. But, that’s alright. It helps us appreciate these luxuries when we do have them.

Daisy loves the couches at this house. I don’t blame her! They’re very comfy and feature electric recliners. Nice!

Although the temperatures have been in the high 90’s with “feels like” temps around 106, we still enjoy being here. I’m sure we’ll return next year.

This house is perfect for hosting company and we’re so excited to have several friends coming to visit during our stay.

Ocean Springs, MS

We made it to our May home in Ocean Springs, MS. Wow! This is a big change from the cabin on the lake!

Such an enchanted little cottage! Jeannie has paid such attention to detail.

The jasmine vine is so beautiful right now!

Check out the beautiful live oaks lining the driveway.

The gravel drive is mixed with beautiful glass stones.

Can you see the crystals hanging in the tree? They are beautiful in the sunlight.

I think we will really enjoy our time here. Check out this rental at VRBO (click << link to see interior photos).

Back to where we began

We are back in Georgia. Well, actually we’ve been here since the first of April but we haven’t been blogging much. Honestly, there’s not much to say.

While we’re happy to be back for awhile to see friends and our daughter, it kind of feels like we’re just doing our time until the next adventure.

I’ve been working and traveling, as usual, but it just feels strange to be back. I guess it’s because of being in such a familiar place. For the last 16 months we’ve been living in unfamiliar places, meeting new people, and exploring.

We are staying in a cute little cabin on Lake Allatoona in Acworth, GA. As you can see, the area is beautiful. This is the view from our back deck.

Daisy has learned a new game. She can drop her ball off the deck and it rolls all the way down the hill into the water. The first time, I let her go get it. Yuck! Won’t do that again.  The difference in the amount of traffic, in the short time we’ve been gone, is astonishing! Maybe it’s just because we’ve been living in more laid back, smaller communities. I’m not sure but I would swear that everyone moved to Georgia as soon as we left.

In 10 days, we head to Ocean Springs, MS. Until then, we have a few more favorite places to eat and some friends to see. I’m sure we’ll have more adventures to share very soon.

The End, Again

We have reached the end of our stay in Augusta. Yes, February is a short month but it sure feels like time has gone very quickly during this stay. It’s probably because I was traveling during most of our stay and then we were sick.

We have really enjoyed our time here and will most likely return very soon. We have even offered to buy this house should they decide to sell. No, we would not live here permanently, it would be a home base and vacation rental.

There’s this little event called The Masters that happens in Augusta every April which makes it a prime vacation rental hot spot. Plus, it’s a pretty cool place to hang out.  The doggies have really enjoyed our walks in this urban setting. There are big windows to look out, a big porch to lounge on, and a great fenced in yard to poop in.

Stay tuned for a video review of this property.

Still remembering how we got here.

How did you get here? What made you decide to live like this? How did you make it happen? How did you know what to do?

These are questions that people are asking me now. You would think that something so crazy would have had a specific thought date and call-to-action date. I’m pretty sure that’s true but I can’t remember them.

Yes, it’s only been one year since we accepted an offer on our home, began selling all of our possessions, and started the search for vacation home rentals. (BTW, how ridiculous does all of that sound?) But, there’s a lot I can’t remember or maybe I just didn’t think it was important or a key decision.

The most basic answer is that we wanted a change, we were OVER owning a home, and we wanted more control of our time and finances.

The more accurate answer probably lies in the footsteps left in the sand. If you could see them, you’d see that there is only one set because we were carried most of the way to where we are now.

We could not have imagined and orchestrated a more perfect life and living situation than we have had for the past year. This is God, not us.

Are We There yet?

No! We’re not there, yet. But, we’re getting closer.

We drove about 8 hours yesterday and made it to Birmingham, AL. Our cabin was cute and acceptable not nice and comfy. We did get some sleep and the dogs did well.

We were the only ones in the park and it was nice and clean. But, there are no bathrooms in the cabins which requires a walk to the bath house. This is nothing new to us since we have camped many times. However, it’s been raining and there was MUCH mud. Blech! I HATE mud!!

Anyways, we are fine and we just made it to the Mississippi State Line. Only about 4 more hours to go and we’ll be in Hot Springs Village, AR.

Some lessons learned:

If I were to ask you to define a perfect vacation home, how would you answer?

What if you would be in that home for 4-6 weeks with 2 dogs?

But what if you weren’t living out of suitcases and everything you own is along for the ride, as well?

That’s a hard question to answer until you’ve had a chance to give it a try. We are now 8 months into this new way of living and these are a few things we look for:

King Size Bed:

We have two dogs that sleep with us. We cannot do Queen size beds! It just doesn’t work. No sleep is had by the humans.

Single Level Homes:

Sometimes this is a challenge but I try my best to find homes with the least amount of stairs. When I see a two story home, I see the house above. Imagine carrying all of your belongings up several flights of stairs for a month’s stay. Blech! Just NO!

Must be a House:

While there are many beautiful apartments, condos, and townhomes, I only book homes. We have dogs and it’s just easier. Plus, the Beagle is a screamer. He just can’t help himself!

Close Proximity to Airport:

I still have to fly for work, sometimes. With our new lifestyle, I fly much less but it’s still necessary from time to time and I refuse to drive two hours to an airport.

Washer and Dryer:

Because DUH!

It’s been a year…

One year ago, today, we put our house on the market and decided to start this crazy adventure. I cannot believe it’s been a year!!

Wow! I remember how crazy scary this decision was to make. There were times between August 4th and December 10th (the date we moved) that I really thought that this was the absolute dumbest thing we had ever done.

Honestly, there was a lot of grieving involved. I wanted so badly not to care about our “stuff”. I’m not one to cling to my earthly belongings and it made me mad that I was sad.

Ok, enough of that… I am SO happy that we made the decision to move on and free ourselves from our giant, pretty, box of stuff.

We have been traveling for 9 months and my only regret is not having done it sooner.

P.S. I DON’T MISS MY STUFF!!! I don’t even remember most of it. I really recommend letting go of the beautiful things that weigh you down and prevent you from embarking on your adventure.
