The Villages

Time for cooler weather

We’ve got a couple of days left here in The Villages.  We’ve really liked it here, but we’re ready to move on.

It’s been incredibly hot and humid for most of this month.  Judging from what the weather says, Arkansas is going to be like Alaska compared to the weather we’ve had here recently.

As usual I’m fighting move anxiety and Jodi’s completely calm.  For some reason, it’s stuck in my head that moving means a lot of work and stress.  That couldn’t be farther from the truth.  Our trailer is still the same size as always, 5×8.  There’s only so much to be done when you’re filling such a small trailer.

Jodi tried to find us a dog friendly hotel with ground floor entrance, or someplace similar to stay overnight.  This would have made the trip much easier since it’s about a 14 hour drive.  As it stands right now, we’ll be driving straight through.  Oh well.  We’ve both driven further without stopping.

So, that’s it for now.  Life goes on as usual.

Palm and Sun

The dogs and I were out for a short walk this morning when I noticed the sun shining through this palm tree. I thought it was picture worthy, so here it is.

You Shouldn’t drive on sidewalks

We’re still in The Villages in Florida.  This morning I was driving our golf cart back from the post office.  I was stopped and waiting to make a left hand turn into our neighborhood.  One oncoming car passed and then I saw something that made me do a double take.

The next car in line, a new model Buick, being driven by what appeared to be a lady in her 60’s.  The problem was that she was driving her Buick on the sidewalk.  She drove there for a couple hundred feet or so and then swerved back onto the road and kept going.  Luckily, there were no pedestrians or golf carts in her path.

The driver of a car stopped on the side road and I looked at each other, shook our heads and went on with our day.  I think I need a hat with rear view mirrors on it so I can stay safe on the sidewalks.

Too hot for a dog walk

We’re still in Florida and it’s been insanely hot.  I’m still wondering why there aren’t dead golfers all over the course at the end of each day.  I don’t know how they are avoiding heat stroke.

It’s also way too hot for our usual dog walks in the middle of the day.  I did a search today to see if there was a rule of thumb for knowing when it’s too hot to walk the dogs on concrete or pavement.

Turns out there’s a 5 second rule to know whether your dog’s paws can take the heat or not.  According to several websites, in order to find out if it’s too hot, hold the back of your hand to the concrete or pavement.  If you can’t take the heat for 5 seconds or more, then neither can your dog.

I haven’t tried this yet, but it makes sense.  Try it at your own risk.

I drove a golf cart through hell and back

It is just fun to be able to drive a golf cart wherever you need to go within The Villages.  Take today for example.  I needed to pick up some rental papers from the main rental office in Lake Sumter Village.  According to The Villages GPS app, it’s a 5 mile drive via golf cart.

It was about 10am or so and I had been out with the dogs and it wasn’t too hot.  So I made the choice to drive the golf cart over.  Unfortunately, I didn’t plan ahead for the second half of my mission.  It was a very comfortable and pleasant drive over. One of those days when everything just seems to be right.  I got my business done at the sales office, had lunch at Panera Bread and then headed back home.

As I said before, the weather on the trip to Lake Sumter was very nice.  The weather on the way back was similar to what I would imagine hell feels like.  Even with the heat though, it was still fun.  Plus, environmentally speaking, I’m sure I saved a penguin or something by driving the cart instead of the car.  Actually, a polar bear probably ate the penguin that I may have saved, so all of my efforts were for nothing.

Oh well.  If you ever come and stay at the Villages, make sure you have a golf cart.  You’ll be glad you did.

It’s a busy night at Brownwood Square in the Villages. This is just one row of many golf carts.

Still trying to figure out mail in the Villages

During our travels we have had our mail delivered or packages we’ve ordered sent to whatever address we were living at.  It’s never been a problem until we arrived at The Villages.  Most of the time we depend on Fedex to get our stuff to where it needs to be.

But recently we’ve run into delivery glitches that we haven’t found a solution to yet.  In The Villages the mail doesn’t get directly delivered to any house.  There are banks of mailboxes at different locations for different neighborhoods.  Unfortunately, a key to a mail box does not come with the house.  That means if we want to receive something while we’re in the Villages, it has to come directly to our house via Fedex, UPS, etc.

One of the main glitches we’ve started running into is with our orders from Amazon.  We order some of our everyday household type things from Amazon.  With a prime account, our deliveries from them used to always come from Fedex.  Recently though, many of our orders have started with Fedex and then been handed off to USPS.  Once it gets handed off to USPS I can no longer track it with any accuracy and it won’t come to our house.

Jodi was able to speak to the mail person at the nearest pile of mailboxes and she took our info in case anything ended up there.  But, it’s still an unreliable way to function.  I’m guessing that Fedex has started giving business to USPS because of some government pressure, but it sucks because of their unreliable nature.

We’ll keep working on a solution that works for the time we’re here.  Maybe we’ll just refrain from any online orders until we move on.

New Villages Cart

We’re back in the Villages and this new house includes a cool golf cart.  It’s not as fast as the last one, but it definitely runs better.

The Villages, FL Vacation Home – Village of Hillsboro – July 2015

This is more of a video tour than a review. We absolutely loved this house but, the owners love it, too. The day after we checked out, they moved in full time. I don’t blame them. It’s a great little house. But, this means that none of you will have a chance to rent this beautiful home.

As usual, I waited until check-out day to do the video and I forgot a few things like the exterior and the garage. But, at least I remembered to take the video. Right?
