Stop looking at me alligator!

I feel like i’ve been in a secret game of cat and mouse with the alligator that lives in the water behind our vacation rental.  I saw him or her several times when we first got here.  But, it’s been invisible for quite some time.  I know it’s there, behind our house waiting to pounce.  Do alligators pounce?

I’ve searched online for sounds of an alligator to no avail.  I can’t figure out whether I’m hearing it at night or not.  My guess is that it has learned to sound like a bird in order to sneak up on us, but I can’t be sure.  We’ve got a couple of weeks left here on Fripp Island, so I only have to escape and evade for a short time.  I’m positive that I can avoid being eaten during this last stretch.  But, if you happen to find my shoes and nothing else, then you know what happened.
